2nd Degree Murder Charge Laid – Deer Lake Resident

POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH IN DEER LAKE

– Update –

(DEER LAKE, ON) – On July 10, 2010 at approximately 7:12am members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) were called to the nursing station in Deer Lake north of Sioux Lookout. Upon arrival, NAPS officers were advised that one male had been pronounced deceased and that a second male, 27-year-old Neilson MEEKIS from Deer Lake had been injured. MEEKIS was subsequently flown to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for treatment.

At the request of the NAPS, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch was called in to assist in this investigation.

The deceased is Joey CROW a 27-year-old male from Deer Lake. A post mortem examination took place at Kenora Lake of the Woods District Hospital on July 12, 2010.   

On July 15, 2010 as a result of further investigation, 26-year-old Jason D. MILLER from Deer Lake has been charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to the Criminal Code in relation to Joey CROW’s death. He is to appear in Kenora court July 19, 2010.

The investigation is continuing.
