Local Artisans Add to Creative Economy

Twenty-seven local artisans from around Algoma know that their creativity and artistic focus is an integral part of our unique creative economy.

In early October the Ontario Crafts Council in conjunction with the NORDIK Institute, the Ontario Crafts Council, the Town of Wawa Cultural Mapping Project, the Superior East Community Futures Development Corporation and the Wawa Economic Development Corporation hosted a 1 ½ day CraftSmarts Workshop that helped get the creative ball rolling, so to speak.

Did you know that the communities of Wawa, White River, Chapleau, Sault Ste. Marie, and Batchawana Bay include goldsmiths, stained glass artisans, potters, knitters, writers, painters, jewellers, quilters, sewers, woodworkers, actors, weavers, photographers and so much more?  Each one of these folks is a cultural resource and as such, adds their creativity to a growing sector of our economies.

How do we keep the ball rolling? A desire to learn more about how to market, support and proceed with a sustainable business plan is the next step.

If you are a local artist interested in networking with your fellow artisans and want to explore “where to go from here”, a second workshop will be scheduled in Wawa for January 2012.   Topics may include how to start a co-op, collective or non-profit organization; creating a sustainable vision; available grants and resources.

If you wish to participate or want more information, please contact Johanna Rowe at 705-856-2244 x236 or jrowe@wawa.cc.
