SCHREIBER, ON –  January 16, 2012, the Grades 7/8 classes from Holy Angels School (Schreiber) and St. Martin School (Terrace Bay) were given the opportunity to visit one of our area’s largest employers, Barrick’s Hemlo Gold Mines near Marathon.

Students began this tour at the observation deck of the open pit mine where they witnessed rock blasting.  Next, they were able to see the core samples that the geologists take to determine how much gold is in the rocks.  They then made their way to the mill, where a chemical engineer explained to them the process they use to extract  the gold.  The students were very impressed by the gigantic rock crushers!  Finally, the students learned about the dream job for any mine worker – driving huge trucks thousands of feet underground with a remote control!  Imagine – all the hours that they spend playing X-Box could pay off!

This trip was a great learning experience for the students, and allowed them to investigate many different careers related to mining.  They enjoyed their trip and would like to extend their sincere thanks to Roger Soukey for organizing and conducting an informative and interesting tour through the gold mine.  They would also like to thank the parent volunteers for taking time out of their schedules to accompany them, because if not for them, the trip would not have happened.
