The Manitouwadge Family Health Team is challenging your organization to register a team and join us and the Manitouwadge General Hospital on our journey towards an active healthier community.
WHO: This event is open to anyone of walking age. Teams may be made up of colleagues, family or friends
HOW: Go for a Walk… anywhere, anytime. You will be given a pedometer that will track the number of steps you walk. We have calculated the number of steps it would take to walk across 5 countries in Europe, and the goal is to walk that many steps, as if you were walking across Europe! It’s a long distance, but with a team of 6 you can do it!
Every 2 weeks, your team will walk from one country to another:
- Weeks 1 & 2: Luxembourg to Brussels 177km May 7th – May 21st
- Weeks 3 & 4: Brussels to Amsterdam 173km May 21st- June 4th
- Weeks 5 & 6: Amsterdam to London 222km June 4th – June 18th
- Weeks 7 & 8: London to Paris 340km June 18th – July 1st
If your team reaches the goal at the end of a 2-week segment, you will be entered in a draw for that segment’s prize. If your team reaches the goal for all 8 weeks, you will be entered in a draw for the GRAND PRIZE! There will also be a draw for a participation prize, for very individual who completes at least one segment.
There are pit stops along the way, which one team member must complete in order for your team to be entered in the draws. These pit stops include activities that will help you get more familiar and involved with things that are happening in our community!
WHY: Did you know that 63% of Canadians – just like you – are not active enough to achieve the health benefits they need from physical activity? Regular moderate exercise helps prevent cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, bowel cancer and osteoporosis. It can also help with stress management, alleviate depression and anxiety, strengthen self-esteem, enhance mood & boost mental alertness.
“Walking in the Wadge” is the first step toward a healthier, active lifestyle. The MFHT will be holding an assessment day, May 7th, to discuss individual health issues or concerns. Blood pressure checks, weight in’s and body composition may also be completed on this day. Please call for an appointment (826-3174).
IMPORTANT DATES
WHEN: “KICK OFF” BBQ May 6th, 2012 Manitouwadge Community Recreation Center @4pm. Free for everyone who has registered for the Amazing Race Walk. There will be a minimal charge for those who are not registered for the walk. Grand prize to be drawn at Canada Day celebrations.
- Teams are encouraged to register by April 30th to assist with the planning of events.
- Travel packages will be available at the BBQ or may be picked up at the Manitouwadge Family Health Team after May 6, 2012
Grand Prize draw & Participation draw will be made at the July 1st community celebrations.
