Legion Branch 242 and MHS Students Preparing for Remembrance Day in Manitouwadge

MANITOUWADGE, ON – This week, members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 242 were visiting local businesses and families for orders of wreaths to be laid at the 2012 Remembrance Day Ceremony Sunday, November 11th at the Manitouwadge Recreation Centre Auditorium.

If you missed the Legionnaires’ visit and would like to purchase a wreath please contact Ron Sheppard.

Why buy a wreath? Businesses and families may purchase a wreath as a memorial to a passed veteran or in honour of someone who served or is still serving our country while other purchase their wreath recognizing all those who have served our country in Canada’s Armed Forces.  Whatever the reason, the benefits remain the same. Funds raised through the sale of Remembrance Day wreaths allow the local Legion branch to support important causes in our community including bursaries,  bereavement luncheons for veterans, supporting troops oversees and much more.

This year Manitouwadge High School students will also be supporting the local Legion Branch’s poppy drive with door-to-door poppy sales to begin this week.

The annual Poppy Campaign, the foundation of the Legion’s Remembrance Program, is the major source of funding for the Legion to accomplish its mission. The mission of The Royal Canadian Legion is “to serve veterans and their dependants, to promote Remembrance, and to act in the service of Canada and its communities.” In essence, the purposes and objects of the Legion were born of the need to further the spirit of comradeship and mutual assistance among all who have served and never to forget the deeds of the fallen.

It is paramount that the Legion strives to pass on these goals and traditions to the families and descendants of our ex-service personnel and to raise this awareness among all Canadians.

It is the generosity of Canadians that enables the Legion to ensure that our veterans and their dependants are cared for and treated with the respect that they deserve. This November campaign, which sees Poppies distributed to Canadians of all ages, serves to perpetuate Remembrance by ensuring that the memory and sacrifices of our war veterans are never forgotten. When Manitouwadge High School students come to your door, buy your poppy proudly, knowing that the funds raised will assist our Canadian veterans and their dependants.
