Greenstone OPP Educate Students of Geraldton Composite High RE: Caution On Highways

OBSTRUCTING TRAFFIC IS DANGEROUS

GREENSTONE, ON – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Greenstone Detachment wants to remind the public that standing on the highway interfering with traffic is dangerous. The definition of highway includes municipal roads and streets.

Although pedestrians do have the right of way when crossing or walking alongside the highway, a pedestrian must walk along the left side closest to the shoulder or curb. It is an offence to be blocking the highway impeding the lawful use and enjoyment of the highway to motor vehicles.

Specifically this has become an issue in front of the Geraldton Composite High School, students are outside the school property loitering on the highway (Second Street West in Geraldton, Ontario) in the live lanes of traffic. This is dangerous to the safety of students and motorists.

The OPP has been working in co-operation with the Geraldton Composite High School to address this issue by educating and informing the students through personal interaction and verbal warnings. There are multiple charges under Provincial Acts or the Criminal Code that are applicable in this scenario which can and will be used if necessary to ensure the safety of students and motorists alike.
