MHS Wolverines Win 2013-14 NWOSSAA Boys Volleyball – Next Stop OFSAA

MANITOUWADGE, ON – 2 Days of intense volleyball play unfolded last Thursday & Friday, November 15th/16th, as the Manitouwadge High School Wolverines, Queen Elizabeth District High School Warriors from Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay’s École Secondaire Catholique LaVérendrye Vipers faced off to claim the NWOSSAA Boys “A” Volleyball 2013-14 title . Game 1 ELCLV Vipers Vs. MHS Wolverines was won by Manitouwadge, Game 2 QEDHS Warriors beat out ESCLV Vipers. Game 3 saw the Wolverines Coached by Wayne Pittman and Bronson Keough win against the Warriors giving MHS the advantage going in to final game Friday morning.
All three MHS games during the championship were very well attended, community members, family and friends of the senior boys team attending in large numbers to cheer on the home town favourites.
Best 3 out of 5 would win the Championship, Manitouwadge won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-18 but stumbled in a very close game 3 as the Warriors tried to rally together winning 25-21 against the Wolverines. In what would become the final set, the Wolverines showed their true colours, working as a team to take the game 25-22. “They didn’t give in, they didn’t quit. They dug deep, worked very hard and communicated very well” said Senior Boys Volleyball Coach Wayne Pittman in regards to how the Wolverines claimed the NWOSSAA title.

The Wolverines will now represent Northwestern Ontario at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations 2013-14 Boys Volleyball Championships this Thursday, November 21st through Saturday, November 23rd. With little time to practice before they travel to North Bay for the next level of play Coach Wayne Pittman is looking for the team’s strengths “We play really, really well defensively. We have been one of the strongest teams defensively in the past 4-5 yrs and hopefully we’ll use that to our advantage at OFSAA” said Pittman. GOOD LUCK to the WOLVERINES as they represent this week in OFSAA ‘A’ Boys Volleyball Championships – Bring home another banner boys, we’re rooting for you!!
