Fined $1,000 for Illegal Moose Hunting

A Northeastern Ontario man has been fined $1,000 for illegal moose hunting.

Cory Bernas of Sundridge pleaded guilty under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and was fined for hunting moose without a licence.

October 7, 2013, Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers contacted a moose hunting party near Williams Lake, north of Dryden, and learned that Bernas had harvested a bull moose south of Lac Seul, near Williams Bay. Upon investigation, officers determined that when Bernas harvested the moose, he had been more than five kilometres away from the member of his hunting party who held the bull moose game seal. In addition, Bernas only had a moose calf game seal. His rifle was seized and will be returned once his fine is paid. The moose was seized and forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Edith Baas heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Dryden, on November 26, 2013.

The public is reminded that hunting party members are required to be in communication with one another and must not hunt more than five kilometres away from the tag holder. The person who harvests wildlife while hunting in a party must immediately notify all other members of the party, and the game seal holder must immediately affix the game seal to the wildlife.
