Ontario Reaches Deal with NFMC to Take Over Road Maintenance

THUNDER BAY, ON – Today, MPP Michael Gravelle was pleased to announce that after several months of hard work and strong advocacy, Caramat Road will once again be open to public traffic as of tomorrow, Friday August 8, 2014.

The Ontario government has entered into an agreement with the Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation (NFMC) for it to begin maintenance of the full Road.

“I am absolutely thrilled that an agreement has been reached to ensure that Caramat Road will reopen to public traffic. I’d like to thank the Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation, Ministers Murray and Del Duca as well as everyone who helped to make this agreement possible. This is certainly exciting news for me and many residents of my riding.” Michael Gravelle, MPP Thunder Bay-Superior North

This 93-kilometre road is an important access route between Manitouwadge and the community of Caramat, located in the municipality of Greenstone.

“The NFMC is committed to making a positive contribution to the communities in which we live, work and support.  This agreement is an example of partnerships we hope to establish not only with the Provincial Government, but also First Nations, communities and our Industry Partners.  We wish to thank MPP Gravelle and his staff for their commitment to finding a solution for the Industrial Road and we are proud to be a part of it.” Daryl Skworchinski, Chair of the NFMC Board
