MANITOUWADGE, ON – Eleven students from Manitouwadge High School traveled to Thunder Bay last month, to spend a full day in the shops at Confederation College and see the post-secondary opportunities that await them in regards to both education and employment. The students also spent approximately 4 hours honing their welding skills and being tested by professionals in the Confederation College Welding Shop.

This opportunity is a component of the Dual-Credit Welding Course the students are enrolled in at Manitouwadge High School.  Upon successful completion of this course students receive both a high school level credit and the credit for the equivalent of a 45 hour module at Confederation. This is all part of a long term effort to interest students in the trades.

Confederation facilities were fantastic, staff members were exceptionally helpful, showing sincere interested in the students’ efforts. Students toured the heavy equipment and auto mechanics shops, carpentry and machinist shops, and Confederation’s Aviation Centre of Excellence (ACE). Several students commented on their choice of post-secondary institution having been influenced by this trip.

At the ACE, MHS students saw the planes ACE students work with. They also enjoyed a demonstration of the advanced technology ACE students, and the aviation industry, are using. Among this impressive technology was a 3-D printer, used to produce/test parts, and development and use of carbon fibre products which are also used by industries outside aviation.

The participating staff and students, as well as MHS adminstration, would like to thank Confederation College and their staff, especially Confederation’s Welding Program Coordinator Mr. Jim Dyson. This exceptional opportunity will certainly influence the future of many of the students involved. Mr. Dyson will be visiting Manitouwadge High School near the end of the Dual-Credit Welding Course to formally test the students’ welding techniques.
