A Longlac resident has been fined $2,000 for careless hunting.

Arlene Aird pleaded guilty to careless hunting and was fined $2,000 after shooting a deer on a cottage road. Aird is not allowed to hunt in Ontario for one year and must successfully complete the Ontario Hunter Education Course before being allowed to hunt in the province again.  The deer was seized and the meat was donated to charity. Aird’s firearm was also seized.

Court heard that on October 15, 2014, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officers responded to information from the Ontario Provincial Police who contacted Aird while she was hunting on Twin Bay Road in Nestor Falls. Upon investigation, conservation officers determined that Aird shot a deer from the roadway using a high-powered rifle at the same location the previous day. She shot in the direction of a cottage located about 300 metres behind the deer.

Justice of the Peace Robert McNally heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Kenora, on January 6, 2015.

The public is reminded that laws regarding the use of firearms are in place for public protection and safety. It is illegal to shoot from, down or across a public road when hunting.
