SCHREIBER, ON – The Schreiber North Shore Stars Midget Girls recently returned from the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association’s Provincial Tournament in Toronto finishing a very respectable 4th out of our 24 team division

The Stars were in a pool of 24 teams all competing for a shot at the gold medal. After the round robin we were in a 4 way tie for first place having won all our games.

Sunday didn’t turn out to be a good day for our team and we lost our semi final game and then lost again in the bronze medal round to a team from Ottawa leaving us in 4th place over all.

The distance factor and getting a late start to the season along with only be able to practice a few times throughout the season had a major role in our team coming up short against teams that practice twice a week and play a 60 game season.

The majority of the teams that we have played over the 7 years since the inception of the North Shore Stars have been from the Toronto and Ottawa areas.  They could never quite figure out where we came from but after taking home 3 consecutive gold medals and one silver medal they weren’t long figuring out who we were when we showed up in their part of the province   to play hockey.

With the welcome addition of 4 new girls from Thunder Bay to round out our roster this season  we are proud of the fact that over the years we have welcomed players from all the north shore   communities from  Thunder Bay to Wawa as well as Dubreuilville, Manitouwade, Longlac and  Geraldton.

We are hearing rumours of an alumni team of girls who are and will be going to university and college in Thunder Bay being formed to play in a league in Thunder Bay next season.

Meeting new players and parents and watching the friendships develop has truly been one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling facets of our program.

This season marks the end of an era as seven of our veteran players reach the age limit for playing midget girls hockey. In addition long time head coach Mark Figliomeni and assistant coach Chris Hewson will also join the ranks of the retired.

On behalf of myself and Coach Mark we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those players, parents and supporters of the Schreiber North Shore Stars who have supported our team over the years and wish the very best to the players and staff of the future teams.
