Movie pundits would tell you that the modern day box office is dominated by sequels and prequels. Well established franchises such as “Lord of the Rings”, “James Bond”, “Planet of the Apes”, “Hunger Games” and others continue to dominate at theatres, thus occasionally overshadowing new or unfamiliar movies trying to break into the market. This February, an exception occurred. “Kingsman the Secret Service” opened with a big budget and big expectations. But, being unfamiliar with home audiences, would it resonate and result in big ticket sales? The answer was yes. Kingsman went on to gross nearly 280 million dollars worldwide as it’s over-the-top style drew rave reviews from movie goers and critics alike. Kingsman Secret Service: starring Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson- After the death of a member, a secret spy organization recruits a troubled street kid into their training program. Meanwhile, a wealthy tech genius plots to take control of the world and it’s up to the Kingsman to stop him. Project Almanac: starring Jonny Weston – A group of friends discover the blueprints for of a time machine, and ultimately construct one. Lazarus Effect: starring Mark Duplass and Olivia Wilde- A group of researchers develop a procedure to bring the dead back to life. But when an experiment goes horribly wrong, leaving one of them dead, the group tries to bring her back to life- with horrifying results. 88: starring Katharine Isabelle and Christopher Lloyd – A young woman enters a roadside diner with no idea where she is or how she got there. Split between two timelines, she gets taken on a violent journey as she seeks out the person responsible for her lover’s death. (Action) (DVD)
One Shot One Life: starring Steven Seagal- Detective Elijah Kane is back in action, this time in search of a dangerous nuclear device capable of causing catastrophic damage. (Action) (DVD)
Red Army: The story of the Soviet Union’s famous Red Army hockey team through the eyes of its players. (Documentary/Sports) (DVD)
