OTTAWA, ON — Today MP Bruce Hyer released the following statement regarding the designation of heritage lighthouses under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act:

“Community groups that work to protect our heritage lighthouses and curate an important part of Canada’s maritime history have been waiting to hear about the status of their lighthouses since the review process finished at the end of May 2015.  On June 12, I questioned the Conservative government in the House about the lack of information being released about the status of lighthouses in Thunder Bay – Superior North and across Canada.”

“Today, June 19th, my office received a long-awaited letter from Minister of Environment Leona Aglukkaq containing the official designation of Lamb Island Lighthouse as a heritage lighthouse. The designation of this lighthouse under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act ensures the protection of its heritage character for present and future generations.”

“Congratulations to Paul Morralee, Paul Capon and Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior for their successful bid to protect heritage lighthouses in Thunder Bay – Superior North. Their work will create much needed economic development opportunities for rural communities and augment our new Lake Superior Marine Conservation Area.”
