A Timmins man has been fined a total of $625 after unsuccessfully claiming Aboriginal harvesting rights.
Robert Mayotte was convicted and fined $125 for fishing without a licence and $500 for hunting game birds without a licence after unsuccessfully claiming Aboriginal harvesting rights.
Court heard that, on June 22, 2013, a conservation officer was checking anglers on Kenogaming Lake. When the officer checked Mayotte, he identified himself as an Aboriginal person and claimed the right to fish without a licence. Court also heard that on September 21, 2013, a conservation officer checked Mayotte while he was hunting in McNeil Township. Mayotte identified himself as an Aboriginal person. Charges were laid after Mayotte failed to provide information to support his claim of having harvesting rights in the Timmins area.
