Highway 17 – Pic River and Gravel River Bridges

Hwy17-updateTHUNDER BAY, ON — The Ministry of Transportation advises the motoring public that the Pic River and Gravel River bridges on Highway 17, between White River and Nipigon, will remain reduced to single lane traffic this winter.

A temporary single lane modular bridge ‎will remain in place with traffic control at the Highway 17, throughout the 2015-16 winter. The Gravel River Bridge on Highway 17, located east of Nipigon, will be reduced to a single lane with temporary concrete barriers and traffic signals over the winter.  Work at these two structures is expected to be completed in the 2016 construction season.

The ministry is ensuring measures are put in place for this winter season to monitor and control these sites. Additional advance signing will be erected to provide adequate early warning to approaching traffic to each structure.  Reduced speed zones will be in effect and enforced by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).  In addition, the Area Maintenance Contractor will be concentrating their maintenance efforts at the structures to ensure the approaches and the single lane access is bare.

Highway 11 is also available as an alternate route for heavy truck traffic, to avoid any possible delays that may occur due to weather conditions which will affect highway conditions.

We apologize for this inconvenience and advise motorists to be cautious and drive according to weather conditions.  Please reduce your speed when approaching the bridges and follow all traffic signage.
