OPP Communications Centres Inundated with Calls RE: CRA Scam

FROM THE EDITOR: If only it were this obvious! Those committing telephone fraud can seem very official and convincing, if in doubt, contact the authorities and DO NOT provide personal information of ANY kind!

WAWA, ON – Last month, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) warned the public with regards to the ongoing Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Scam that is running rampant throughout Ontario. It has now come to our attention that our Provincial Communications Centres are being inundated with calls from the public advising that they received one of these calls. It is not necessary to contact the OPP to report that you have received one of these calls unless you are a victim of fraud that can be attributed to this scam.

Any calls regarding the Canada Revenue Agency Scam should be directed to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or to their website (Click to visit). This website will provide an online means of reporting and offers great tips so that you do not become a victim of this or any other fraud.

Some of our Communications Centres are receiving upwards to 100 or more calls per day from people wanting to advise that they received one of these scam related calls and although your intentions are appreciated, it is these calls which are at times restricting the OPP’s ability to take calls for service from the public that require a police response.

Visit the Canada Revenue Agency website (CLICK HERE) for information to assist in recognizing this and other scams that are plaguing Canadians.
