SCHREIBER, ON – Schreiber Public School Students in Mrs. Buchan’s 6-7-8 class  and Mrs. Scott’s 3-4-5 class  were the winners of our #SGDSBCODES week one challenge!

Staff across Superior-Greenstone District School Board are encouraged to participate in the 5 week challenge that helps support our “Before the CODE, Hour of CODE and Beyond the CODE” initiative currently underway in our Board.

Why Code? Embedding coding opportunities through coding is an important part of the overall learning that we need to provide for our students so that they are prepared for an increasingly digital world.

Coding is not about the technology. It is about the learning. It’s a way of thinking.  We want our students from across Superior-Greenstone District School Board to develop computational thinking skills and 21st century competencies  such as critical thinking/problem solving skills, creativity, collaboration and communication.

Mrs. Buchan’s and Mrs. Scott’s class participated in “unplugged” coding challenges that had them practising their computational thinking skills by creating procedural writing tasks  for everyday tasks they complete. The challenge is “unplugged” which means students did not need to access technology to practice their coding skills. We are learning that coding is much more than using a computer!

The classes were given a pizza party for their challenge win and it was a great way to end the week!
