Cattle Truck Involved in MVC

MARATHON, ON – On Saturday October 28, 2017 at approximately 11:45 a.m. members of the Marathon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a vehicle collision west of Marathon on Highway 17, just west of the Little Pic River Bridge.

An east bound tractor trailer failed to negotiate a corner and left the roadway tipping into the south ditch. The trailer broke open and some cattle did exit the trailer and are now being gathered up to be loaded into another tractor trailer. Emergency services including the Marathon Fire Department (MFD), Terrace Bay-Schreiber Fire Department (TBSFD) and Superior North Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended the scene to assist. The single occupant, a 24 year old male of Brownlee SK was transported to a local hospital by EMS to be treated for his injuries and later released.

The highway will be closed temporally for short periods of time but should remain open to one lane while the cleanup continues. Motorists are asked to use caution and expect some delays while travelling in this area.

Police want to remind the public that the cattle is the property of the insurance company and any removal of cattle by anyone other than the authorized cleanup company is prohibited and is thief until the scene is released by the insurance company.  The Marathon OPP continues to investigate the cause of the collision.
