Arrests for Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking

MARATHON, ON -On Thursday May 16, 2019 approximately 02:30pm an officer of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Manitouwadge Detachment conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle for speeding on Highway 17 near Marathon, ON.  

While conducting the traffic stop the officer detected the odor of raw marihuana emanating from within the motor vehicle. The officer investigated further and while conducting a search discovered a large quantity of suspected fentanyl (approximately 255 grams) as well as a quantity of cocaine (approx. 115 grams).

As a result, [Edited by ONN] a 26 year old male from Toronto, ON was charged with:

  • Obstructing a peace officer contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code.
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – cocaine – for the purpose of trafficking contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Also [Edited by ONN], a 44 year old male from Scarborough, ON was subsequently charged with:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance – cocaine – for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – fentanyl – for the purpose of trafficking contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
  • Personation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruct justice contrary to section 403(1)(d) of the Criminal Code.
  • Obstruct peace officer contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code.

Both males were held for a video bail hearing in Marathon on Friday May 17, 2019. They were later transferred to the Thunder Bay District Jail to await further bail hearings regarding the charges.
