Wawa Wins $75 000 in Molson Community Cheers Contest!

Molson Coors Community Cheer announces 2012 donation recipients totaling $1 million

Molson Coors will provide funding to 21 community projects across Canada

TORONTO, ON – More than 100 communities across Canada applied to receive funding for their community projects from Molson Coors Community Cheer, and today, Molson Coors announced the 21 projects that will receive a piece of the $1 million fund.  Since the program’s debut in September 2011, applicants were encouraged to rally support from their community in the form of garnering “cheers” (votes) for their project at www.ourcommunitycheer.com. The cheering support of Canadians lead to 35 Finalists (projects that received 225 cheers or more) which were then evaluated by the Molson Coors Community Cheer committee based on four key criteria:

  1. The amount of community cheer and support
  2. The ability to meet application criteria
  3. The project’s alignment with Molson Coors values
  4. The positive social impact on the community and ability to demonstrate success
Wawa received support in the contest from local residents and those in neighbouring communities who understood the importance of the community centre, for which funds were being sought, being in good working order. An impressive 867 total votes were made at the Community Cheer website for the project!  Mayor Linda Nowicki had explained, when the contest kicked off, why they were in need of funds for the Wawa Community Centre.
“The Wawa Community Centre has experienced major equipment failures including the loss of its heating and cooling system. The estimated costs of the arena upgrades are about $750,000 so we need all the help we can get to access funding to pay for the upgrades.”  said Nowicki.

The successful projects focus on building active, social and vibrant communities in Canada and range from building sports and recreation centres, swimming pools, parks, hiking trails and skating rinks. The 21 projects are currently featured online at www.ourcommunitycheer.com.

The funding recipients have been notified and the brewer is looking forward to celebratory festivities with each group.

“The whole community is buzzing with excitement! Thank you Molson Coors Community Cheer so very much for creating such a spirited way of connecting people together and supporting a project that is at the heart of our recreation and social gatherings. It’s fantastic!” says Tamara Liddle, Community Cheer Project Leader in Wawa, ON.

Congratulations to the 2012 Molson Coors Community Cheer funding recipients:

CONGRATULATIONS WAWA! We look forward to following as upgrades and renovations take place at the community centre.

ABOUT THE WAWA COMMUNITY CENTRE PROJECT

Renovate the Community Centre in Wawa Ontario. The facility has an arena, curling rink, fitness centre and banquet hall and is used for mens/womens hockey tournaments, large events like the Wawa Fishing Derby and many community activities. The renovation project of the Wawa Community Centre means that a small remote town in Northern Ontario in economic decline can sustain its primary recreational and social gathering place. The project would support an active and healthy community, create jobs and maintain needed economic spin-offs to local businesses from major events that attract visitor spending in Wawa. The project goals are to replace the heating, cooling and HVAC system with a new energy efficient system to ensure the ice rink and curling surface are operational. Adding defoggers will add to reducing operational costs and new fitness equipment will encourage increased physical activity and gym memberships. The project’s success will be measured by the reduction in annual operating costs of the Centre, increase in number of users and increase in tournaments and events. As well, the reduction in annual maintenance costs of the boiler and HVAC system will be measured. Wawa has a population of 3,000 and almost the entire community uses the facility in various ways from participation in tournaments, carnivals, weddings and organized recreational activities such as hockey and curling. Events at the arena bring an additional 2,500 visitors to Wawa annually.
