TELEPHONE FRAUD ATTEMPT YESTERDAY IN WHITE RIVER

WHITE RIVER, ON  –  April 18th, 2012 the Ontario Provincial Police Superior East White River Detachment were advised by a local complainant of a possible telephone scam.  The complainant reported that a male caller had contacted them advising they had just won 1.8 million dollars.  In order to collect the winnings the complainant was asked to pay a fee to have the money released.  The fraud was not successful and the complainant has since blocked the caller.

OPP reminds the public to be wary of telephone calls and emails that seem too good to be true.  Do not give personal information over the phone or send money to anyone without confirming the caller’s identity and the validity of the information being provided.  For more information regarding these and other types of frauds contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by telephone 1-888-495-8501 or visit them on the web at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
