NDP: Immediate action needed in Wawa says Mantha (incl.video)

Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha

WAWA , ON – Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha arrived in Wawa yesterday after heavy rains forced a state of emergency. The downpour has ceased, however the rain caused a creek to overflow, washing out all major roads and a large section of the Trans-Canada Highway—Highway 17.

“Now that the waters are receding the damage has become more apparent. We have heard the Highway could remain closed for almost a week. There is a real urgency for all government ministries to work together to get this resolved immediately,” said Mantha.

“The Trans-Canada Highway is a major southbound artery; it is vital to the community and local industry. A week without usage of this section of the highway would be devastating for many. This morning I spoke with Minister Wynne and urged the government to act swiftly,” continued Mantha.

“We need the government’s assistance in repairing the highway, and also the smaller roads around the community that have been damaged,” explained Mantha. “There is concern that local bridges have been damaged; we need to ensure they are properly repaired.”

They have started evacuation efforts today to assist many stranded families. Residents of Michipicoten First Nation and Long Beach Road have been unable to leave due to road erosion.

“I am relieved that there have been no major injuries and want to thank the local authorities for acting quickly. Now we need to work together to provide assistance for the people of Wawa and ensure damaged infrastructure is fixed immediately” said Mantha.
