Slate Falls First Nation Mourns Loss of 5 Residents Following Vehicular Collision Into Brokenmouth River

FATAL COLLISION ON SLATE FALLS ROAD

SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON – At approximately 7:00pm CST on June 15, 2013 Sioux Lookout Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was notified of a single motor vehicle collision that had occurred on Slate Falls Road approximately 15 km south of Slate Falls First Nation and approximately 130 km northwest of Sioux Lookout. When officers arrived on scene it was determined that a single motor vehicle (GMC Terrain sport utility vehicle) that had been travelling northbound on Slate Falls Road from Sioux Lookout en route back to Slate Falls First Nation had left the roadway and entered Brokenmouth River.

The vehicle was recovered from the river at approximately 10:00am CST June 16, 2013 and five deceased were located inside. The identities of the deceased have been confirmed as: Kimberly WHISKEYJACK (23 years) of Sioux Lookout; Gordon CARPENTER (55 years) of Slate Falls First Nation; John BIGHEAD (23 years) of Slate Falls First Nation; Samantha LOON (26 years) of Slate Falls First Nation and Claudia LOON (20 years) of Slate Falls First Nation. Post mortems are scheduled to take place in Kenora.

The investigation is continuing.
