Federal Riding Redistribution – Manitouwadge Moved to Thunder Bay – Superior North

FROM THE EDITOR: It is interesting to note that though Manitouwadge Town Council rec’vd what they were hoping, which is a redistribution of Manitouwadge to the federal riding of Thunder Bay – Superior North; they admitted themselves that they did not realize this would not equate to a redistribution of the provincial riding so, if after the next federal and provicincial elections the current MPs and MPPs ran and were re-elected the community would be represented by MPP Michael Mantha (Algoma-Manitoulin) and Bruce Hyer (Thunder Bay-Superior North) [for now at the federal level Manitouwadge is still represented by MP Carol Hughes, Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing as the redistribution changes do not take effect until the next election]. What this will mean to Manitouwadge’s Francophone population, who were originally part of lobbying to have Manitouwadge redistributed to Algoma-Manitoulin and Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, ridings which strong French speaking populations who, are currently served by Francophone MPP (Mike Mantha) and MP (Carol Hughes) respectively.  It can only be hoped that the community’s Francophones will be as well served by the next Thunder Bay-Superior North MP as they have been by Mrs. Hughes.

New Federal Electoral Map for Ontario

TORONTO, ON — The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario has concluded its work of redrawing the province’s federal electoral map.

The independent commission was created in February 2012 to set boundaries so that each electoral district contains roughly the same number of people while also taking into account communities of interest or identity, historical patterns and geographic size in sparsely populated regions.

After considering the views of the public and objections by members of the House of Commons, the commission submitted its final report to the Chief Electoral Officer for transmission to the Speaker of the House. The report was published in the Canada Gazette today.

The Chief Electoral Officer will use this report when drafting the representation order, which is expected to become official in fall 2013. The new electoral map will be used at the first general election called at least seven months after that date.

The commission’s office in Toronto is now closed. Requests for information on the next steps in the redistribution process can be directed to Elections Canada’s Media Relations Office.
