MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISIONS ON HIGHWAY 11 & Assault Investigation Results in Charges

NIPIGON, ON –On Saturday October 26, 2013 at 7:20 p.m. members of the Nipigon detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended Highway 11, Township of Ledger approximately 25 km North of Nipigon, for a single motor vehicle collision.  The driver of a pickup truck attempted to overtake a tractor trailer unit and lost control on the snow covered roadway.  The pickup truck struck the trailer of the tractor trailer unit and rolled into the east side ditch.  The 22 year old male driver of Rapid City, Manitoba, was transported by ambulance to Nipigon hospital for minor injuries sustained in the collision.

Sunday October 27, 2013 at approximately 5:05 a.m. officers of the Nipigon OPP detachment responded to a report of a collision of two tractor trailer units on Highway 11, Township of Greenstone.  The driver of an eastbound tractor trailer unit lost control on the slippery roadway causing the vehicle to roll onto its side blocking both east and west bound traffic.  The driver of a second eastbound tractor trailer unit then collided with the tractor trailer unit blocking the highway.  Two occupants of the tractor trailer units sustained minor injuries in the collision.  Highway 11 was closed until the vehicles could be removed.  The driver of the first tractor trailer unit to lose control, a 33 year old male of Montreal, Quebec, has been charged for Fail to Drive in Marked Lane contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

Later that morning at 10:35 a.m. members of the Nipigon detachment attended Highway 11 west of Macdiarmid, Township of Greenstone, for a single motor vehicle collision.  The driver of an eastbound tractor trailer unit failed to make a curve in the roadway causing the vehicle to go over an embankment.  The tractor trailer unit then caught on fire and was destroyed.  The 51 year old male driver of Tay Township, Ontario escaped the vehicle with minor injuries.  The driver was charged with Careless Driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.  The highway was closed for a period of time while officers conducted an investigation.

Schreiber OPP officers have concluded an assault investigation that was reported on September 30, 2013.  Officers investigated a report of a disturbance at a motel in Terrace Bay, Ontario that occurred during the early morning hours on September 29, 2013.  One male was assaulted.  As a result of police investigation, three males of Terrace Bay and one male of Schreiber have been charged with:

  • being Unlawfully in a Dwelling House,
  • Causing a Disturbance,
  • Assault Cause Bodily Harm
contrary to the Criminal Code.
The males:
  • 20 year old Karson BLACKWOOD,
  • 24 year old Darren TURNER,
  • 22 year old George KING, Terrace Bay, Ontario
  • 18 year old Devon BOURGUIGNON, Schreiber, Ontario

are scheduled to attend Schreiber Court to answer to these charges.
