Marathon High Students Strive to “Survive” Mock Emergency

marathonlogoMARATHON, ON – Severe weather, power outages, forest fires, and industrial accidents – they can all happen.  That’s why Marathon High School and the Superior Greenstone District School Board have partnered to educate high school students on practical survival skills should an emergency happen.

As a part of Ontario’s Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week activities, a mock emergency simulation is scheduled to take place from Friday, May 2nd beginning at 4:00 p.m. to Saturday, May 3rd at 9:00 a.m.

Students will rely solely on the contents of their survival kits, as they spend the night in their school.  During each event, emergency management professionals, first aid responders and representatives from volunteer organizations will engage the students in a series of activities and exercises enabling them to take better care of themselves and their families during the crucial period immediately after a disaster strikes.  These activities include making an emergency survival kit, providing disaster first aid, developing a family emergency escape/response plan, assisting people with disabilities/special needs, and protecting pets in emergencies.

EP Week runs from May 4 – 10, 2014.  Communities across the province will host various initiatives and events to spread awareness about emergency preparedness.

Marathon High School Principal Jennifer Oussoren said, “Youth can help their families prepare for an emergency by learning what to do during a different potentially life-threatening situation such as severe weather or a forest fire.”
