One of the biggest surprises at the box office this year is undoubtedly the Ice Cube comedy Ride Along. Co-starring Kevin Hart, Ride Along opened on January 17th to 48.6 million dollars- shattering all box office predictions. Strong word of mouth and staying power lead to an eye boggling final tally of 134 million dollars. Ride Along is this week’s headline new release alongside Academy Award nominated Philomena, starring Judi Dench.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty: starring Ben Stiller – When his job, along with that of his co-worker are threatened, a daydreamer takes action in embarking on a global journey that turns into something more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined. Philomena: starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan– The true story of a journalist who picks up the story of a woman’s search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. Better Living Through Chemistry: starring Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde – A strait-laced pharmacist’s uneventful life spirals out of control after he starts an affair with a customer who takes him on a wild ride. (Comedy/Drama) (DVD)
Black Nativity: starring Forrest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson– A teen travels to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged relatives, where he embarks on a surprising and inspirational journey. (Drama/Music) (DVD)
Date and Switch: starring Nicholas Braun– Two guys who make a pact to lose their virginity before prom find their friendship tested when one of them comes out of the closet. (Comedy) (DVD)
Flowers in the Attic: starring Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn– After the sudden death of her husband, a mother is forced to uproot her four children and move home- where the children face unspeakable cruelty from their Grandmother. (Drama) (DVD)
Outsider: starring Jason Patric and James Caan – A military contractor is told that his daughter has died, but when he arrives in Los Angeles and discovers the body is not hers, he begins an investigation into what really happened.
