PIC RIVER FIRST NATION, ON – The Ojibway of the Pic River First Nation announced July 16, they expect full support from Pukaskwa National Park in regards to their submission of a proposal to the federal government for a 25-30 MW generating station at Chigamiwinigum Falls.
“We believe that projects like the Chigamiwinigum Falls project are consistent with the Park mandate, and in particular, with the mandate of Pukaskwa Park as a prime example of Canada’s boreal forests. Hydro electric development and the retention of the forest ecology values are completely compatible objectives.” said Chief Duncan Michano
Chief Michano explained that not having signed the Robinson Superior Treaty, Pic River First Nation is continuing to assert their Aboriginal title to traditional territory of the Begetikong Anishnabe.
The project, explained PRFN Director of Energy Project Development Byron LeClair, could produce enough power for the annual needs of 12,500 homes and would be Pic River’s largest project to date with a cost in excess of $100M.
Parks Canada is not new to hosting hydro electric facilities with others at Trent Severn National Park and Banff National Park.
