Folk Festival Kicks Off This Weekend

lftr2014RED ROCK, ON – The 12th annual Live from the Rock Folk Festival kicks off this weekend with a full weekend of music beginning on Friday at noon and running through Sunday at 5:00pm. The festival will be held in Pull-A-Log Park along the shores of Lake Superior in Red Rock. This year’s line up features 21 artists performing on four stages, including several from Northwestern Ontario and the City of Thunder Bay.

  • Binaeshee-Quae Couchie-Nabigon – a young singer songwriter from Pic River First Nation, her musical style is best described as a jazzy-alterna-folk mix
  • Flipper Flanagan – together for almost 5 decades, this iconic local band blends rock, blue grass and celtic in their signature sound
  • Rodney Brown – in his over forty year career, this local legend has donned many musical personas, but these these days writes mostly about Lake Superior
  • Tracy K & Band – a Thunder Bay resident for 10 years, this harmonica playing blues artist has recently returned to her roots in Manitoba
  • The Grumpy Grampas – members of Flipper Flanagan perform for “little folkers”
  • The Knackers – fresh off the release of their first album, this band of music vets is inspired by Celtic instrumentation and the sounds of the American West Coast

 

In addition to the music, visitors can:

 

  • take a FREE trip on the big lake in a 16 seat voyageur canoe, sponsored by Parks Canada
  • visit the “little folkers” area with crafts and supervised activities for children
  • join a FREE morning tai ji or yoga class – play a song at the open mic stage
  • enjoy delicious food, find handcrafted treasures and buy CDs
  • enjoy an evening campfire, where you never know who will turn up to play a tune!

Both weekend and day passes are available at the gate on festival weekend;

  •  Adults: weekend pass = $70 AND day pass = $35
  • SENIORS (over 60 years): weekend pass = $60 AND day pass = $30
  • YOUTH (13-18 years): weekend pass = $60 AND day pass = $30
  • CHILDREN (5-12 years): weekend pass = $10 AND day pass = $55
  • TODDLERS (4 years and under): FREE when accompanied by adult 19+
  • CAMPING: weekend camping pass is $20 per person; children under 12 FREE
