Community efforts pay off as Caramat Road reopens: NDP

ELLIOT LAKE, ON – Algoma-Manitoulin NDP MPP Michael Mantha is pleased to see Caramat Road reopen after months of delays and closure cutting off the heavily used route between Manitouwadge and Caramat in Northern Ontario.

“I have been working closely with the Mayors and council of these communities who advocated tirelessly for the reopening of this vital link between their two communities,” said Mantha. “I am pleased to see their efforts finally being rewarded.”

Mayor Renald Beaulieu of the Municipality of Greenstone and Mayor John MacEachern of the Township of Manitouwadge have been lobbying the provincial government to find a solution to reopen Caramat Road after months of aggravation for motorists.

The 93-kilometre Caramat Road is a popular route between Caramat and Manitouwadge, and cuts travel time significantly for travelers. The Ontario government recently announced an agreement with Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation (NFMC) for maintenance of the road.

“I had several discussions with all relevant Ministers stressing the importance of public access to this road,” said Mantha. “Local residents advocated strongly for the roads reopening, and are glad that day has finally come. This is a great reminder of the importance of community advocacy and participation in government projects.”
