Northwest Region Forest Fire Situation Update

There were four forest fires confirmed in the Northwest Region on August 28. Fort Frances Fire Number 15, Fort Frances Fire Number 16, Nipigon Fire Number 20, and Thunder Bay Fire Number 15 have been declared out.

There were no new forest fires confirmed in the Northwest Region by the afternoon of August 29. There are eight fires that are being monitored in the Northwest Region.

FIRE HAZARD

The forest fire hazard is low throughout the entire region. For Friday August 29, a low pressure system will track across the province creating showers and thunderstorms for most of the region. Local rainfall amounts of 20-30mm are expected from heavy showers and thunderstorms. On Saturday August 30, a ridge of high pressure will bring clearing skies for the region. Winds will be light with temperatures near 20 degrees.

Out of Province Deployment

The Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services program of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry continues to provide support to British Columbia and the Northwest Territories in an ongoing firefighting effort that has been ongoing since mid-summer.

As of August 29, there are 340 personnel on assignment out of Ontario, including 45 in the Northwest Territories and 295 in British Columbia. The personnel include an Incident Management Team, Ontario FireRangers and overhead staff

In addition, Ontario has provided 430 power pumps, two values protection units, 41 portable relay tanks and 10,000 lengths of hose to British Columbia.

Report forest fires in the Northwest Region and the Northeast Region (for areas north of the French and Mattawa Rivers) by dialing 310-FIRE (3473). Southern region forest fires can be reported by calling the local fire department.
