LED Streetlights To Reduce Schreiber Energy Costs

FROM: RealTerm Energy Corp.

realtermenergySCHREIBER, ON – Light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights are seen as a smart investment for the short term and the long term in the northern Ontario township of Schreiber. The upgrade to these energy-efficient streetlights is expected to reduce 66% in the township’s streetlight energy costs and 67% in streetlight energy consumption in the first year with LEDs. Installation of the new 241-streetlight system begins this week.

Schreiber’s Town Council had researched the savings LEDs provide and brought in Local Authority Services (LAS) and RealTerm Energy to oversee the entire project. “We wanted to do the upgrade sooner rather than later because we wanted to take advantage of this savings as soon as possible,” said Schreiber’s Chief Administrative Officer Don McArthur. “We also knew it was a decision that could last 20 years, so we wanted to make sure we did it right, and we were confident in the research from LAS and RealTerm Energy.”

“We stand behind our investment grade audit of the lighting system and we are happy that Schreiber realized its value as a way to help make its decision toward a long-lasting, energy-efficient solution,” said President of RealTerm Energy Sean Neely.

LED streetlights last three to five times longer than existing streetlights, reducing maintenance costs up to 80%. They also provide a clear, white light that improves visibility over traditional streetlights that give off an orange glow. More than 60 Ontario municipalities have upgraded to LED streetlighting with LAS and RealTerm Energy in the past 12 months including Greenstone and Marathon.
