Manitouwadge Municipal Elections : Lack of Candidates Sign Of Apathy?

manitouwadge-logoMANITOUWADGE, ON – Voters in Manitouwadge do not have much of a decision to make in regards to the upcoming October 24th municipal election. The four Councillors’ positions only have four registered candidates; Sheldon Plummer who has served on the current council (2010-2014), Raymond Lelievre who served as Councillor previously (2006-2010) but was unsuccessful in his attempt to hold the seat in the 2010 elections. Two new faces also join the Manitouwadge Town Council team; Ed Dunnill and Peter Ruel.

Some are saying the lack of candidates is a sign of the apathy felt locally in regards to municipal politics.  Whatever the cause, Manitouwadge residents are left to accept those who have registered and will fill the four Councillor seats as of December 1st.

The Manitouwadge Mayoral race does have 2 candidates. Incumbent Mayor John MacEachern who won the 2010 election with more than 1/2 the votes in a race against 3 others who wanted the position (MacEachern received 445 of the 876 votes cast for the 4 candidates); should he be successful again December 1st would begin his 3rd term in office as Mayor of the Township of Manitouwadge.  Running against the incumbent Mayor is Andy Major who ran unsuccessfully for the position a number of years ago.
