Marathon Makes The Switch to LED Streetlights

FROM: RealTerm Energy

realtermenergyMARATHON, ON – Savings in municipal  expenses and energy costs are two clear reasons why Marathon is upgrading to light‐emitting diode (LED) streetlights. Installation begins in mid-‐September upgrading the 495 fixtures to energy-‐efficient LEDs that are expected to reduce streetlight energy costs by 64% and streetlight energy consumption at 69% after the first year. LED streetlights also last three to five times longer than existing streetlights, reducing maintenance costs up to 80%.

Economic issues were reducing Marathon’s tax base while the government’s energy mandate required adoption of more energy efficient programs.  Local  Authority  Services  (LAS) and Real Term Energy brought a solution that saves money and energy.

“We did our due diligence and we saw we could trust LAS and RealTerm,” said Marathon’s Works and Operations Manager Brian Hyshka. “Plus, it’s fantastic that a company could do all that work for us. When we saw how nicely it fit, we knew it was a golden opportunity.”

“We understand that a major infrastructure project like this can consume a great deal of time and energy from a town’s council and operations team,” said President of RealTerm Energy Sean Neely. “We make it easy on the township by providing a turn-‐key service that includes purchasing, installation and recycling of the old fixtures.“

Marathon joins a trend of more than 60 other Ontario municipalities that have upgraded to LED streetlighting with LAS and RealTerm Energy in the past 12 months including Schreiber [CLICK HERE for details of Schreiber’s LED installation], Greenstone, and Blind River. In addition to energy efficiency, LEDs provide a clear, white light that improves visibility and community safety and also deliver more targeted beams to help reduce light pollution.
