OPP at Scene of Train Derailment East of Nipigon (Updated w/video)

oppcolourNIPIGON, ON – January 13, 2015 at approximately 12:00pm EST, officers of the Nipigon and Schreiber Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a train derailment approximately 45kms east of Nipigon.

Subsequent investigation has determined at this time that, one car containing propane has a minor leak.  A Canadian Pacific (CP) Rail derailment crew, CP Police and Nipigon/Schreiber Fire and Rescue have attended the scene.  A Hazmat Unit from CP Rail is being deployed to assess the leak before cleanup can commence.

OPP has set up a perimeter around the affected area for safety reasons, and Highway 17 is closed from the junction of Hwy 11/17 in Nipigon to the Town of Schreiber.  The road is expected to be closed for approximately 24 hours.   The OPP is working with emergency responders and CP Rail to monitor and assess the situation.  No injuries have been reported.

The investigation is being conducted by CP Rail with the assistance of the OPP and other agencies.
