RESOLVED – Barricaded Person Incident in Neskantaga First Nation

napslogoLANSDOWNE HOUSE, ON –  Wednesday, January 13, 2015, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) in Neskantaga First Nation received a call to check up on a person.

Upon police approach to the subject’s residence the police heard what they suspected was a gun shot.  The area was safely evacuated.   Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Emergency Response Team, Tactical Response Unit, and the NAPS Emergency Response Team attended at the location.  At approximately 9:20 p.m. later that same evening, the subject safely surrendered to police.

Derek MOONIAS, age 39, of Neskantaga First Nation has been charged with:

  • Attempted Murder,
  • Careless Use of a Firearm,
  • Possession of a Firearm while Prohibited.

MOONIAS appeared in Dryden court on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, and next appears by video in Thunder Bay court on January 16, 2015, for a bail hearing.

This investigation is continuing by members of both the OPP and NAPS Crime units.

Neskantaga First Nation is located approximately 580 km northwest of Thunder Bay.
