The Supreme Court of Canada has unanimously (9-0 decision) ruled that the law preventing doctors from assisting severely ill, adult Canadians to end their lives on their terms was unconstitutional.

The court ruled that a physician can assist a patient in ending their life if that person is “a competent adult person who clearly consents to the termination of life and has a grievous and irremediable medical condition, including an illness, disease or disability, that causes enduring suffering that is intolerable to the individual in the circumstances of his or her condition.”
