Fatal Collision on Highway 17 West of Marathon

oppcolourMARATHON ON – Friday February 20, 2015 approximately 06:50pm, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment were advised of a motor vehicle collision involving three motor vehicles on Highway 17 approximately 15 km west of Marathon ON.

A westbound motor vehicle lost control while attempting to round a curve, striking the guard rail. The motor vehicle came to rest on the guard rail and partially on the roadway. A passing eastbound motorist stopped to assist. While waiting at the scene for more assistance a westbound motor vehicle lost control and struck the first vehicle that was on the guard rails. Two of the males at the scene were struck by the vehicles and received severe injuries.

EMS attended and transported 4 people involved in the collision to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries.

A 35 year old male from Orillia, Ontario was pronounced dead at hospital while being treated for his injuries. A second male from Marathon, Ontario was being treated for head injuries and possibly being transferred to a major hospital for further treatment. 2 other occupants were treating for minor injuries and released from hospital.

The highway was closed for 13 hours while OPP Technical Collision Investigators attended, and emergency crews and tow trucks removed the vehicles from the scene.
