MNR Base Sought by Manitouwdge

Manitouwadge Mayor and Council Urgently Looking to Meet With the Minister of Natural Resources, Linda Jeffery

Efforts to secure the Attack Base for Manitouwadge have been ongoing; here, at the NOMA AGM in the Spring, Mayor John MacEachern, Council and Town Clerk Cecile Kerster dicuss the town's suitability with Minister of Northern Development Mines and Forests the Hon. Michael Gravelle.

Municipal Leaders from the community of Manitouwadge are hoping to meet with the Honourable Linda Jeffrey, Minister of Natural Resources to present the community as a location for the proposed MNR Forest Fire Forward Attack Base.  The MNR Fire Program is proposing to construct a Forward Attack Base to preposition forest fire crews in the area when fire hazards dictate increased coverage.

The MNR has been considering locating at North Crocker Lake along HWY 17; this would require an investment in excess of three million dollars ($3,000,000).  This location will require starting from scratch, with the need to construct power lines, water and septic systems to support the operation, and feeding and housing facilities for approximately 40 people.  The proposed plan also calls for warehouse, and operation facilities along with fuel dispensing services.

Manitouwadge is asking the MNR Minster to meet with its community leaders and discuss the benefits of locating the proposed Forward Attack Base in Manitouwadge and the benefits it would provide to the MNR Forest Fire Program.

The Manitouwadge Municipal Airport offers most of the services the MNR are hoping to establish at North Crocker Lake and what isn’t found at the Airport exist throughout the community.  The strategic location of Manitouwadge will provide a number of operational advantages to the MNR.

The Mayor hopes to hear from Minister Jeffrey in the very near future and feels with the improvements the MNR has made to their Forest Fire Attack Program in Hearst, Wawa and Geraldton that a review of the site selection for the proposed Forward Attack Base would show how Manitouwadge is a very suitable location with many benefits over the proposed North Crocker Lake plan.
