Marathon Hosts Skills Canada Races

MARATHON, ON – Grade 7/8 students from across the region met in Marathon on Friday, October 22nd to compete in the Skills Canada Cardboard Boat Races.

Schools from the Superior North Catholic board that attended were Holy Saviour, St Martin, St. Joseph, St. Edward and Holy Angels. Students were given two hours to build a boat out of cardboard, duct tape, and contact cement. Their boats had to match blueprints designed by students before they arrived at the competition.

In the afternoon, students took their boats to the Port Hole Pool where they competed against each other in a speed race and weight challenge. Teams of two go into their boats and raced them the length of the pool. Once there, they began the weight challenge of trying to hold as many students as possible in the boat before it collapsed.

The results were:

Gold: Margaret Twomey Public School Team 3
Silver: Holy Saviour Team 2
Bronze: Holy Saviour Team 3
Safety Award: Ecole Val Des Bois
