PIC RIVER FIRST NATION, ON – Friday, November 12th, dignitaries and residents gathered for the Grand Opening of the Pic River Employment and Business Training Centre. In addition to Pic River’s Chief, Roy Michano, and other local dignitaries, area dignitaries including Marathon Mayor Rick Dumas, Roger Souckey, Human Resources Barrick-Hemlo, Bob Hancherow, Confederation College were also in attendance to recognize the importance of this centre.

Pic River’s Employment and Business Training Centre was developed as a result of the surveys conducted within the community.  The objective of the centre is to provide the community with resources to formalize its approach to addressing social assistance dependency.  By combining the efforts of several of the programs on a case by case basis, Pic River Employment & Business Training Centre will work towards increasing personal independence, address barriers faced by clients and improve employment prospects for Pic River First Nation members through direct contact with local employers.

Pic River Economic Development Director Liz Michano used the opportunity of the Grand Opening to thank those who contributed to the completion of the centre “I would like to express my heart filled thanks to all that made this building a reality including our funding agencies FEDNOR – Industry Canada through the Community Adjustment Fund; Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) through the Infrastructure and Community Development Program and Barrick Gold” said Michano.  The Economic Development Director also recognized Crupi Consultants responsible for the feasibility study and Milestone who designed and constructed the building.

Michano and Marian Turgeon, Employment Coordinator at the centre will be responsible for building capacity among the members of Pic River First Nation to assist in preparing them for meaningful employment. The pair were also preparing for the graduation ceremony, later that evening, of participants graduating from the Enable program, completed with help from Anishinabek Employment and Training Services (AETS)

  • Employment related phone calls
  • Employment support services
  • Arts & Crafts marketing and sales program
  • Training Programs

The centre includes 5 public computers which have relevant software installed including a popular business plan creation program and will welcome regular weekly visits by Andrea Collins, of Northwest Employment Works Marathon Office.
