TERRACE BAY, ON – Bullying is defined as a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person’s body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance. Ontario has designated the week beginning on the third Sunday of November (November 18-24, 2012) as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment. During this week, Ontario students, school staff and parents were encouraged to learn more about bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being.

Students at St. Martin School spent the week discussing this very important topic within their classrooms.  The Student Council planned a School Family Activity on Friday, November 16th to conclude the week and further re-iterate the message that bullying will NOT be tolerated.  All students, staff and parents were encouraged to wear BLUE on Friday to demonstrate their solidarity against bullying both in and outside of the school.  All students, staff and parents were invited to the gym at 10:25 am where they watched two videos, one about the role of the Bystander, the other, of the song “Don’t Laugh at Me”, afterwards they participated in a keychain making activity within their school family groups.

The afternoon wrapped up with participants celebrating the conclusion of Bullying Prevention week with a special snack – Cupcakes with Blue Icing…..Mmmm.  St. Martin School will continue to stand strong in our Faith and ensure that our children understand that Bullying in any form is forbidden and will not be allowed.
