A Sioux Narrows man has been fined $1,500 for unlawfully shooting a deer.

John Haas pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 for discharging a firearm from a public road and $500 for hunting without a licence. He is not allowed to hunt in Ontario for one year.

The court heard that on November 5, 2014, conservation officers responded to a complaint of a white-tailed deer shot in the Red Indian Road area in Sioux Narrows. As part of their investigation, officers obtained a warrant to search Haas’s home, where a deer and a firearm were seized on November 10, 2014. Officers determined that Haas had shot the deer on November 4 while standing on Red Indian Road. He then hung the deer in the bush for several days before bringing it home. Haas was not licensed to shoot the deer as he had already used his game seal for another deer harvested earlier that season. The deer seized was forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Robert McNally heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Kenora, on May 26, 2015. For further information on hunting regulations, please consult the Ontario Hunting Regulations Summary.
