Raise Healthy, Happy and Motivated Kids

TBDHU_Logo_KTHUNDER BAY, ON – February 9th, 2016, more than 100 community members gathered at the Victoria Inn to hear Dr. Shimi Kang, an award-winning Harvard-trained doctor, researcher and writer inspire parents to empower and motivate their kids – putting them on the path toward lifelong happiness and 21st century success.

During her presentation, Kang – author of the critically acclaimed book, ‘The Dolphin Parent: A Guide to Raising Healthy, Happy, and Motivated Kids’ –  described “simple, but not necessarily easy fixes to create balance in [children’s] lives.” Using the metaphor of the Dolphin, Kang advocated for “…firm but flexible parenting that balances rules and expectations with autonomy and choice,” and she guided parents to incorporate time for play, connection and contribution into their schedules.

“Implementing these effective parenting principles into family life will create self-motivated, future-ready children,” Kang says.

Kang’s presentation is the second in a speaker series held by the Healthy Kids Community Challenge Thunder Bay to provide parents with information for building relationships for mental and physical family health.

“Through the guidance of speakers like Dr. Kang, we are providing families with the encouragement and knowledge to help them make changes that positively impact the health and happiness of their children,” says Marianne Stewart, Healthy Kids Community Challenge coordinator.

The next event in the Building Superkids Speaker Series will be: Rana Pishva from Children’s Centre Thunder Bay on Tuesday March 29th.
