It’s been a busy week at Manitouwadge High School (MHS); Thursday, October 1st the Hornepayne Hawks’ Junior and Senior boys played against their counterparts from the Wolverines teams (Click to visit post with photos of Thursdays games). Saturday, October 3rd the Annual Wadge Volley Senior Volleyball tournament welcomed senior teams from Marathon High School and Lake Superior High School to face off against MHS’s Wolverines 1 and Wolverines 2 (senior teams) as well as the MHS Junior Boys Volleyball team. These exhibition games give Northshore teams outside Thunder Bay who are without competition in their own communities’ opportunity for game experience prior to the North Superior Secondary School Athletic Association (NSSSAA) tournaments coming up in November.

Thursday’s junior face off resulted in the Wolverines winning three sets against the Hawks Junior team; 15-2, 15-11 and 25-15 respectively. Though originally scheduled to play 4 sets the last was cancelled to allow the Hornepayne teams to begin their 4hr drive home before the sun set. Senior Boys action saw the Wolverines winning the first three sets 15-11, 15-13, 25-16 respectively before the Senior Hawks took the final set 25-19.

On Saturday, when volleyball action continued at Manitouwadge High School(MHS) with the seniors’ tournament, Manitouwadge was victorious once again with the Wolverines 1 Senior boys winning the tournament, 2nd place was taken by the Wolverines Junior boys and in 3rd place were the Marathon Falcons. The Wolverines Junior team was especially happy of their placing at this senior tournament, having won every game against the traveling senior teams and even one of the sets they played against the Wolverines 1 seniors.

At the end of the day MHS Senior boys coach Wayne Pittman thanked the traveling teams for having participated before presenting the day’s awards. Lake
Superior High School
(Terrace Bay) Tyson Bouchard was named Most Sportsman; Best Digger was presented to Marathon Falcons’ Jordan Principe; Wolverines Junior, Kevin Gauthier was named best setter; Wolverines Junior, Lloyd White was named Best Server; Best Blocker was presented to Travis Tessier, Wolverines 1 senior; and Brandon Mehlenbacher was recognized as both Best Hitter and Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the tournament.

Congratulations to all the players for their efforts and a big thank you to the Wolverines coaches and parents who volunteered to put these games together.
