Many families across the province are winding down after summer holidays and getting back into the fall routine, but I am reminded that this week is Legion week.
This year more than 400 Legion branches throughout Ontario including those across Algoma-Manitoulin and northern Ontario will be making extra efforts between September 21st and 27th to connect with the community at large.
Many of my family members served in the Canadian Forces and Legions have a significant meaning for me personally. I am a proud member of Branch 561 in Elliot Lake.
The Royal Canadian Legion had the sacred trust since its inception ensuring the tradition of Remembrance of our veterans and the annual Poppy Campaign to raise awareness of the men and woman who gave their lives and continue to risk their lives for our freedoms.
The Legion is proud of its military heritage and still maintains close ties with the Armed Forces, but over the years different categories of membership have been changed to include members of the community.
Legions continue to play a vital role and when you join a legion in your area, you support essential services in our communities, including seniors support, housing and care for the elderly, cadets, youth and sport programs, and much more. There are many ways the Legion gives, and by joining you can give too.
This is all accomplished with different fundraising activities, including membership drives, donations, social activities and partnerships with different groups and organizations.
