Gross Motor Skills Program

Monday the Family Place’s Gross Motor Skills Program started at the Rec Centre.

I have to say that Emeraude did enjoy herself, very much.  I was so impressed with her when at the beginning of the class she suggested follow the leader and then asked to be the leader and did a great job leading everyone around the whole auditorium, switching what she was doing many times without even a pause… “we’re monkeys and monkeys live in trees; now hop like a kangaroo…” it was so neat to watch her! I couldn’t have been more proud!

I was very appreciative that although I was using my walker that day, Emeraude participated the whole time. This was helped by the woman in charge who was Emeraude’s partner for things that I couldn’t manage (although there weren’t many). Also, for much of the class as there was no direction or planned activities; Emeraude asked her often to play and join her as she  pretended her scooter board was a boat she was paddling to an island, asking the lady to help her dig for treasure which she did very enthusiastically going along with all of Emeraude’s suggestions which I thought was  really considerate and sweet. I’m hoping that next Monday I will be in better shape and able to participate more fully.

I was a little dissapointed that the lady in charge had nothing prepared at all and it is a whole hour this year.  I thought her supervisor would’ve spoken with her and asked to see what she had planned, if she had any questions or needed any suggestions seeing as it is her first time giving the class.  They described it in their newsletter as promoting large muscle development and coordination so I would’ve thought some research would’ve been in order to ensure the activites were centered around those goals.

I guess having been in the city with Lloyd when he was that age and having participated in many programs, both family centre fitness programs and more specific kids gymnastics programs I had some expectations. This isn’t the first year I have participated in this  program with Emeraude and last year the lady in charge at least had somethings in writting she referred to during the class… Hoping last week will have helped her realize that an agenda is necessary.   I think there should be some respect for people’s time and that they are choosing to give it to you regardless of the class being free…
