The science of clouds with Emeraude

Lloyd gave Emeraude a great cloud book this Christmas which is perfect for

her age and will be for years to come. 9780060291013It lists the types of clouds, how they are named and what weather to expect when each cloud type is seen…  And I was very much looking forward to the opportunity to take it outside and compare the clouds we were seeing to the illustrations in the book to try and predict some snowfall.  Yesterday, we did just that. There were clouds that Emeraude impressively identified immediately as Stratocumulus (I think that’s right, I don’t have the book at hand right now…) I of course had to refer to the book before letting her know that she had indeed identified them correctly.

Today we saw that it had in fact snowed over night and decided to try the experiment at the end of the book. Now, as experiments go, it was not the easiest. Capturing the smoke took many attempts and even when I did we were not successful in creating a cloud the way the book said we would so I am hoping to make a second attempt sometime very soon.  It was fun though and gave Emeraude an idea of how fun experiments can be.  Plus, hiding in the dark bathroom with her at attention flashlight in hand was in itself quite entertaining and fun 🙂
