Homeschool – Snow Science = FUN!

Monday  I decided to keep it simple. Lloyd was nice enough to realize we were loosing our day and after badminton he became a chef. When we came in from collecting our snow and before starting our experiments we were able to sit down at the table as Lloyd had even set the table perfectly in addition to making delicious pork chops, mashed potatoes and broccoli – YUM!!! Thank you SO MUCH Lloyd, I love you always but was extra proud this day!

Emeraude was supposed to have had a sitter from 15-17pm but she quit at lunch time passing the message to Lloyd on the phone (I was at MGH getting meds) and so there wasn’t a lot of time to plan anything and I would never have been able to sit down with the kids for supper had Lloyd not stepped up and made it xoxo.  It was beautiful outside, big sun, blue skies and warm weather. Emeraude LOVED the slush and jumped a few big puddles 🙂

We needed to find some clean snow and thankfully we succeeded just around the corner, about 3 houses over (this is what I thought she might be doing with the sitter who couldn’t pull the wagon due to shoulder problems).   We filled a Tupperware container with some fluffy snow off the top of a yard where there didn’t seem to have been anyone all winter. Before returning home however, we went by the Petro to pick up some slushy juice so Emeraude could also make some snow cones for her desert 🙂

The taffy went more or less well. Next time I will be trying the recipe I found on this blog:

Catherine Newman Weekly Blog

It’s 100% maple syrup, which is what we used, but with some salted butter added.  Ours was also tricky because most recipes refer to a temperature at which you pour it into the snow but we didn’t have a candy thermometer (one of these days I’ll get one of those because we could use it often). Reading Catherine’s blog and looking at her photos, I realize our taffy was working, I just didn’t remember my elementary school days well enough and overworked it too soon once it was in the snow. Regardless, it was a ton of fun and Emeraude thought it was amazing so I felt wonderful and like it was a successful experiment.

Next, we did our ‘snow cones’ she put clean fluffy snow into a favourite cup, we found a big straw and just added the slushy juice we had picked up & then she stirred it up. She was intrigued when too much stirring turned it all back to slushy juice and she needed to once again add snow. You are so much fun to be around Emeraude 🙂
